These young entrepreneurs sold me napkins enhanced with perfume a few days before the
2009 Khan el-Khalili bombing in Cairo. The older asked me to smell the aroma penetrating through the plastic that covered the napkins refusing to be conquered by the smell of diesel fumes. After letting them keep the change from my purchase they insisted that I “take more tissue”. I politely refused and the elder of the two motioned and spoke in Arabic to the younger to give me a charm bracelet made of simple black rope and local blue stones.
